A Fresh New Year. Welcome 2012!

Written By: Jaime Valdes-Riench, owner of Travel & Events with Style

Another year about to begin; wow time flies when you are having fun. I am sure every blog you read will be about another new year’s resolution and asking you what you are going to do differently in 2012. Well, if you follow our blog you will know I am not one of those who people who really believe in new year’s resolutions. Change should be applied every day. When we challenge ourselves beyond the norm it is amazing what we can accomplish, and most importantly it is what we accomplish for others that will really matter. Knowledge and experience grows challenge, and we welcome it to make us better for our clients. I do have to say is it is wonderful to have a fresh start and a new year is a great benchmark for it. That in itself is inspiring.

So what is in store for 2012? Time will only tell. For us on the With Style team, it will be about growth and tailoring even more for our clients. It will be adding more services and most importantly connecting internationally to find amazing, realizable vendors for our clients. We strive to go beyond, and it is a true honour to be a part of our couples special days. To us, that is what matters. It is exciting that we are growing our team to meet the demand of our couples in this new year. The weddings and events we are working on internationally just keep getting more and more breathtaking. We truly believe that it is because our wonderful couples are allowing inspiration and style to be infused in their weddings.

We ask you to visit more often. If I must make a New Year’s resolution it will be to share more images with you all so you too can be inspired. We are also going to introduce you to our team as well in the coming months. We are of the very few in Manitoba (if not the only) that can truly say we are experienced international wedding planners. This bold statement does not come by planning just one destination wedding. It is our honour that we have been doing this for over 15 years and 7+ years as our own independent firm. Considering all the couples we have had the honour of working with, I must say thank you. You where never a number to us, we looked forwarded to talking to you almost every day, and I can personally say I actually missed you once our planning was over and you celebrated your marriage. That is why we rush to work in the morning. You make our jobs so amazing. You all are the reason why I personally can say love my job so very much, and I know my team feels the same way.

So SALUD! And nothing but the best in 2012 and beyond!

It's Our 7th Birthday!

How time has flew yet we have come so far

A word for the writer: Jaime Valdes-Riench,
owner of Travel & Events with Style and With Style Designs

What a honour it is to announce our companies’ 7th birthday for Travel & Events with Style and With Style Designs. In some ways it has felt like it happened in a blink of an eye, yet looking back and going over the memories is puts me into a state of awe of all the ground we have broken to get to this point.

When Travel & Events with Style first opened it doors to serving its guests, it was a business model almost unheard of, especially for our little city of Winnipeg, MB. I am a firm believer that most things are meant to be and every day is a gift ready to be unwrapped. Every milestone we passed where truly moments to remember always. Hard or easy, they are what gives us experience.

When Travel & Events with Style was created, the goal was to merge the love of travel with weddings. Destination Weddings where starting to grow and to have a firm that offered the travel agency and the wedding planner firm under one roof only made perfect sense. As time went on, we as a company started to notice the areas of challenges for our couples. We then added services such as Officiant services to be wed prior to departure, wedding invitations, wedding websites, and really, the list always seems to grow. But when a service is added on, we educate ourselves in that area to offer our guests our very best. The best part of passing “lucky seven” is that we have now have had the chance to grow our relationships with amazing suppliers and prime vendors to give our couples and their guests the very best. One thing we have always strove for was to keep our company couture and boutique. The only way to offer service that is beyond status quo is to keep the quality with hands on, personalized service.

It brings us great personal joy that our teams is growing in every direction. Our newest and very talented addition is Tiffany Check, who is an accredited wedding planner and destination wedding specialist through WPIC. Having another experienced wedding planner on our team has now offered our local and destination wedding planning clients more thorough service. She is definitely a gem to find and look forward to you all enjoying her blog posts in her areas of expertise!

Now in closing, as an owner, and almost mother to this dream come true of a company, I can only say that With Style will keep getting better with time. Everyone on our team cares about what we do and why we do it. Integrity IS the way we do business and going beyond is because we care enough to do it.

To everyone who has stuck by us thorough these years, to every client that has honoured us as being our guest, and to everyone we have met along the way, I personally want to say, Thank you. It is a blessing we are here doing what we love and you all where a large part of it!

Destination Weddings – travel agent, wedding planner where to we begin?

Written By: Jaime Valdes-Riench, owner of Travel & Events with Style

You sat down as a couple, made the decision and know you want a destination wedding, now where do you turn? Ads and billboards are everywhere and suddenly everyone is a destination professional. Every family member and friend is more than whiling to share their experiences and opinions. This can be an over whelming to a couple, and the true essence of a destination wedding is to have their wedding away, leaving the stresses (and possibly winter) behind.
As a couple, take some time to find out what you both are hoping for while you are away. Are you looking for adventure, relaxation, culture, luxury or all of the above? Often the first thing every couple says is, “We imaged something different than everyone else’s wedding we have seen”. The hardest challenge is: What do you define as “different”? What would make your day truly distinctive? Write a list of the most important items you would hope for and get ready to explore your options.

A lot of couples desire “off the beaten path” destinations. When exploring these options, it is important to make note of a few key points:

  • If it is not a regular vacation spot for your gateway (i.e. Winnipeg), there is a chance their may not be direct flights. Are direct flight very important to you? Are you whiling to over night for a connection in order to get to your destination?

  • The more the location is “off the beaten path” the more costly it may be. It may be so because of lack of volume for airlines and vacation companies to bring people from your gateway to that location. Are you whiling to pay a little more? Are your guests whiling to pay a little more?

  • Depending on the location, the area may not be as prepared for weddings or costs may be much higher because weddings that are held there are simply more exclusive. A lot of the Caribbean islands can have a higher prices tag vs. the more typical spots we are used to seeing.

Once your research has been completed and priced by a travel professional, you may come to a cross road. Simply, the options may not be to your liking or budget. Costs may be high or travel too long when you consider your guests. Don’t allow this to be a road block, but rather a stepping stone. A suggestion is to go back to why you chose the area and what drew you to it in the beginning.

The next suggestion is to sit with your destination wedding professional and map out your best options so you can find the most viable locations and resorts to fit your criteria. Hiring a professional who is both a licensed travel agent and wedding planner is simply invaluable. A seasoned travel agent would have the experience to direct you towards alternative travel options so you may choose a different destination that can fit your budget and offer better flight plans. A destination wedding planner would be able to guide you as a couple to what you can do in order to make your wedding distinctive and unforgettable on budget. An experienced destination wedding planner has accumulated the knowledge of different wedding packages abroad, how to change them to fit you specifically, and your desired look. They also can suggest which resorts to choose so they can offer you the best options that would suit your wedding vision. Both areas of knowledge are necessary when choosing the best location for your special day. Compromising one of these services may not be a corner you wish to cut in order to receive the guidance you desire.

A destination wedding requires more than simply travel arrangements, and a wedding deserves attention and dedication. Having professionals helping you in every area will ensure your wedding will be nothing less than what you always hoped for.

Who’s that Girl?

A little about Jaime Valdes-Riench & about her companies
Written By: Jaime Valdes-Riench, owner of Travel & Events with Style

Well, first off, I think I should apologize for the title and pay credit to Madonna who really made that title distinctive. I simply wanted to get your attention and finally write what I am often asked as a business owner of Travel & Events with Style and With Style Designs.

First off – who am I? Well, I am one of those people who knew from day one that every minute we spend learning something is never wasted and should never be put on a shelf (seriously ask my parents, I was quite the ambitiously artistic little girl who was obsessed with Wonder Woman – who knew I would be her one day?). I would like to elaborate on that for just a minute and explain why it is pertinent. A lot of people throughout their lives have a career change. I on the other hand believe that every time I feel a career change coming on, I would challenge myself to learn something new and I find away to take my new found education and apply it. This was a great way to give my clients even more!

Right out of high school I jumped into the hospitality industry. With my mother-in-law as a cake decorating mentor, and new entrepreneur, I learn a lot from her and found my new love of weddings. (No, I am not a wedding cake decorator, and you’re welcome. I am sure most of you appreciate that I gave it up after my lack of skill). After a few years I put it aside to jump into travel education and start as a travel agent. I was fortunate to get onto the federal government account where I learn more about the world and conventions in matter of 7 years than most regular agents would learn in 14yrs or more. I am not tooting my own horn; I am simply saying it was sink or swim at its best. Thank goodness I learned to swim quickly.

After my son, I knew my passion where with weddings. I also have always been an artist, so I took graphic design part time. Somehow everything came together. Within the year of 2004 we opened the doors to our companies: Travel & Events with Style and With Style Designs. I made a point of being educated in every area of the company and even went out to get my designation in wedding planning from WPIC ( which was unlike any travel agent in Winnipeg at the time.

Even though this post is supposed to be more about me, it is also about our companies’ growth as it is my pride and joy. It is important for you to know before you hire us as a company, and in turn me, that we are boutique and very specialized. Even though we have been around as a company for 6+ years (7 in October), we still feel we would rather be a smaller team that works on every detail. This way our clients clients walk away feeling that were understood and that we made their dreams a into reality. We are not that company you send an email off to for a quick quote. We are the company that sits with you first to meet to see if we are the right fit for you, simply because we care that much. Now don't misunderstand, we do offer quotes of course, but with care and knowledge of you individually. The word couture is starting to be used a lot, but we feel we can be bold by stating that as we are boutique, tailored and educated in our respective industries. This in turn gives our clients the best services with actual style. Most of all, we care!

So who’s that girl? Someone who cares, loves, and is deeply passionate at what she does. Staying grouned and appreciating everything is so important to me. I know there is always something to learn and have a hard time being around those who don`t feel the same. Anyone who's ego has grown out of control really as no business being in business with me. Reason being, they no longer care about you the client. It is about them and their "business". Over time, finding great colleagues and vendors that have the same qualities, ethics and personalities makes for the best team anyone could ask for! I enjoy being approachable and “human” with a touch of class. So if you are in Starbucks, take a look over your shoulder. Chances are it may be me sitting at the table next to you, having a coffee with a client.

Thanks for reading this very long post and Salud!

Distinctive Destination Weddings – Tips on Decor

Written By Jaime Valdes-Riench, owner of Travel & Events with Style

Destination weddings at resorts are can give couples mixed feelings. If it is important to the couple to find a way to set themselves apart from everyone else who has explored the path of the same wedding package, they may feel over whelmed. The question that is asked is, “How may I make our day, OUR day without looking like everyone else?” Also, where do you begin? A suggestion would be to work closely with your destination wedding professional and takethe base wedding package and make it so much more!

The base wedding packages for destination weddings, at most popular resorts, really cover the bare essentials for what a wedding should begin with. You may have the basic bridal bouquet, boutonnière for the groom, and a centerpiece plus one tier wedding cake for the reception. That is hardly wedding calibre of what a wedding should be if you where wanting more. So how do you obtain that without breaking the budget? Simple, work with someone from home and add on!

The basic wedding package is basically that, the base. There are 2 options available: 1. Adding on with the resort and not worrying that you have to bring anything with you but your clothes and love and 2. bringing the extras to make it yours! Both answers are perfect for the right couple. To have the piece of mind that you are taken care-of and nothing needs to me carried with you is peace of mind in itself. If you where planning to organise everything through the resort, the areas of compromise are that colours may not match through out the wedding, nor florals my not be cohesive or even be on the colour scheme you are requesting. Tropical countries offer natural flowers that are bold and vibrate in colour and they may not always keep with a theme. Example: many bouquets are filled with local tropical flowers, but you may end up with a bouquet of orange, yellow and vibrant fuchsia together. It is all in one’s taste on whether or not you embrace the location’s charm and what they have to offer. Now if you prefer to have more control on the over all look of the wedding it will take a little more planning.

As with any wedding choosing the base colour scheme is intrical. Next would be to find out what the resort can offer as far as guaranteeing that themed colour so it is cohesive. It is important to note that bouquets are not always the image of perfection as they are here. A great alternative is to have a local floral designer make up bouquets for your wedding party from high quality “real feel” flowers. The key with faux is that any colour is achievable and transportable. If quality faux flowers are chosen, they also can be taken home and remade into something you will see everyday in your future home. If packed correctly, they will travel impecitively and will look fresh even in intense heat. You also have the added bonus of using your bouquet again if you have planned your day after shoot.

Here are a few other tips on how to work with your resort to create your special look: Tiffany Chairs (what we locally call Chiavari chairs) are now available at most 4 – 5 star resorts in the Caribbean and Mexico. They add elegance to a room without a tremendous amount of fuss. Another tip is to add additional centerpieces to add to the look. One of the more standard centerpieces at resorts right now are the 24” cylinder vase with a floating candle. They are either trimmed with a colour ribbon or steamed faux flower submerged in the water. Depending on the size of the reception and number of guests, seating is more often long rectangle tables, with a family style set up. This usually is a result to not having enough guests for multiple circle banquet tables. One cylinder or tall rectangular vase can easily be lost on a table of that shape. Adding a few additional cube or smaller height vases filled with flowers gives texture, colour, and contrast. For those who want to add even more onto the look, bring long steamed faux orchids or exotic flowers and rent vases from the resort. Adding 3 tiers of height completely changes the look.

Another way to make the reception’s look more distinctive is adding linens and Tiffany chair covers as you would at a wedding locally. Most resorts offer a few options for linens. Overlays or runners are now being offered additionally as well, but are not always very affordable if rented threw the resort. But why not rent from home and add to the look? Locally we have amazing options, and thinking ahead will give a finishing touch. Elegant over-lays bring colour to the room, while custom tiffany chair covers as a final look of elegance to an already gorgeous look. Both pack small and light. Renting locally and bringing to the resort is a great way to combine the local charm with something more current and tailored. It is important to mention that there may be special deposits with local rental companies to make such arrangements.

The last fun item to consider for your destination wedding is practical fun items such as coloured parasols and fans. Giving fans to all attending guests at the ceremony gives a little touch of colour throughout the crowd and comfort to everyone. Parasols are a fun way to have as an alternative or addition to bouquets for bridesmaids and possibly attendees. They are both elegant and functional.

Destination Weddings do not have always have to have the look that they where chosen from a catalogue. It is always important to find an experienced professional who can make your wedding, your wedding. Travel and Events with Style has dedicated their services to find ways for couples to have a wedding abroad tailored to their individual tastes with quality and with style. Between offering services in house or finding the best possible suppliers, it comes down to planning your day and making it full of wonderful memories.

Kids Parties - Have some fun!

Written By: Jaime Valdes-Riench, owner of Travel & Events with Style

We don't as often have the chance to do up kids parties, but I wanted to show some fun pics that I hope will inspire you a bit and give a deferent flavour to our blog. While everyone is buzzing about the royal wedding, I thought why not bring us back to the parties we all participate in EVERYDAY. Our kids, relatives and friends birthday parties. And how do we make them fun, look great and stay on a reasonable budget. (honestly, not all of us are all that crafty). I know most of us do not have the budget to make huge over the top kids parties, but a little spurge here and there and make for a fun success.

Here are a few tips to make the look on a tighter budget:

1. Create a theme and colour palette and continue the look a consistently as possible. When you keep the colour consistent everywhere it give the appearance you put more time into the party than you may have actually done. This also means that those of us who are not as crafty or simply do not have a lot of time can give the illusion that a lot of time went into the party.
(Secret: helium balloons are always keep the theme, they fill a lot of space, have minimal take down. Best of all, if you give a few to every child who attends you do not have anything to take down or store later!)

2. Create games and crafts around that theme and palette. We recently had our son’s birthday at Art Land Inc. It was a great place for all the kids to do a themed craft and have a ton of fun for 3 hours. The staff asked us our child’s like and what the theme was so every child did fun soccer themed craft and brought them home.

3. Make one focal point and focus a lot of the decorations in that one area. This is the biggest secret I can share if you want to make an impacting party on budget. Everyone always gravitate around the food, so why not bring the candy buffet and theme and focus around the table? We simply adore Cake-ology’s cakes and all the creations they make for us when we give them an idea. They always are my centerpiece for our kids parties and I just build and build around it! Keep the same colour palette again (monochromatic) and fill the area with balloons. We always get the wow, and it is completely enjoyed because it is based around the best part of party.. the food!

Well, I hope you enjoy the pics below. This was simply a labour of love. These types of parties are definitely the most fun to plan, but most importantly the most fun to attend!

Wonderful Wedding Show in Winnipeg - Thanks for coming out and paying us a visit!

Writen by: Jaime Valdes-Riench
Images by: With Style Designs

We really wanted to say thank you to everyone who came out to visit us at the show. It was our first year there and it was with a warm welcome indeed! I feel confident that we showed you, our guests, that we truly believe weddings are about being distinctive and style infused. We also strive to be very different than any travel agency. We specialize in destination wedding planning and a local wedding coordinating as well as being a travel agency. We think weddings should reflect your personality and by bringing something different to the decor or theme. We want your guests talking to be about your event in an amazing way for years to come. Here are some pictures of our booth and a little bit of our inspiration!
Travel & Events with Style has always strived to go beyond what most think is what a wedding should look like whether it is here or abroad. The décor we chose was an infusion of a destination wedding in Thai Land, Bali and with a modern twist. The bubble décor theme was a fresh take on the typical jewel accents you currently see everywhere. The back drop included acrylic orbs that refracted the up-lighting with larger glass ornaments holding tea lights. Our table took the tropical theme of palms and Macara orchids and united them in a 4 foot elegant vase that gave a hint of a tropical palm tree. There where tiered demission accents with smaller hanging orbs. These smaller orbs held blue and orange orchids and tear drop jewels for a tropical rain forest yet glamorous feel. The linens where layered in the same colour scheme. A papaya coloured overlay with a golden shimmer and olive green linen under it grounded the look. Place settings where layers of Mahogany wood place mats, green chargers, royal blue table clothes and intricate satchels as party favour gifts. The table was finished off with Mahogany Chiavari Chairs that where left simple and clean, which allowed for all the other colours to come forth with out being over done.

Lastly, the cocktail tables where covered with Peacock blue linens with a royal blue shimmer, royal blue ties and bubble glass vases in tiered sizes. Inside the vases where blue/purple orchids wound with bear grass. It was a distinctive look and can be introduced anywhere and will be remembered. It was the show stopper that kept everyone interested. We added cultural accents whenever possible to give the exotic look. Metal urns and vases where introduced in varies areas which added different texture and supported the theme. We used the largest urn for our ballet draw, which would be perfect for any presentation collection at your wedding.

It is important not to be afraid of colour. If done correctly and grounded correctly, it can have an amazing impact and leave your guests wowed! Adding themed accents that are not usually considered wedding décor can make the impact that this day is a reflection of your personality! When we look for decor for a wedding, we really take the time to look off the beating path. Our firm doesn't believe you should have to choose from package A, B or C to have decor. You are an individual, thus so should your event be!

Wonderful Wedding Show in Winnipeg

We wanted to ask everyone to visit us at the Wonderful Wedding Show in Winnipeg at the Convention Centre January 22 & 23, 2011 from 11am - 6pm.

It will be our first time at the show and we thought it appropriate to show Winnipeg that destination weddings can be low stress and style infused when you do it With Style. There are a ton of travel agents who have the knowledge and there are wedding planners who sport destination weddings on the side here in Winnipeg, but our firm takes them very seriously and specializes in them 100%. From high style destination weddings in the province or distictive destination wedding abroad, we are your perfect cocktail to a wedding dream come true.

When looking for us at the show, look for the palm leaves and orange Macara Orchids. Colour upon colour, but style infused all the way!
